What Would Your Character Say/Do Wednesday

I’m always looking for questions to ask my characters; anything to pull them out of their shell and see how they act in foreign territory. I wondered what it would be like if my characters participated in other Middle Grade and Young Adult stories. How would they act in Narnia, or at Hogwarts? It’s interesting to see how your characters act in a completely different setting.

Interview questions for your character based on “Suite Scarlett.”

1)What specialized school would your character want to attend? What would their best subject be?

2)If they were in a play, would your character be the star of the show, a bit player, the director, the designer, the art dept…?

3)Does your character have siblings? If so, which are they closest too? Which do they have issues with? Have they ever had to face the possibility of losing that sibling to illness?

4)If your characters parents/family were in financial trouble, what would he/she do to help?

5)Is your character a good problem solver? Able to think on his/her feet? What’s an example of a time when they had to come up with a fast solution to a problem?

  1. Ooh... one of these questions hit home. I'm so going to have to look at my characters siblings.

    Thanks :-)

  2. Thanks Misha

So my answers for today are based on my brand spanking new character from my new WIP. YA Dystopian which is about as far away from Suite Scarlett as you can get.

    1) If William got to attend a specialized school, he'd want to attend a Wilderness Survival specialty. (like an Outward Bound). His best subject would be archery, but he also likes to read, is good at math, and plays chess.

    2) In the unlikely event William was in a play, he would probably be a bit player. He doesn't like to perform in front of people. But he might also be in the chorus, because he has a very good tenor voice.

    3) William had a younger brother, named Matt. He did his best to look out for him after their partents died and society went to hell following the plagues, but sadly Matt died. William still feels guilty, not only because he couldn't save his brother, but also because he was a bit relieved not to have someone else to look after.

    4) William was a very adept thief in the early days of the plagues. He was able to steal extra food and fuel to help his family survive. But then the food ran out.

    5) William is a good problem solver. It was his idea to use bug cocoons to create screens for the windows.

Feel free to add your own character's answers, or just save the questions for future use.

  3. Well, you've piqued my interest in Suite Scarlett. My character would shake her head at the idea of a specialized school, and definitely be happy with a bit part.
